| Beef, Meat & the Environment Almost by definition, this page and the pages that follow, will be more of a "Blog" than a fixed statement or discussion of a certain set of ideas, although all of that and more will eventually be included. Our training and experience in Cultural Anthropology has, we hope, given us the ability to step back, take a broader view, and hopefully shy away from applying our own personal beliefs and values to cultures or sub-cultures which may not share the same values as the one we have come from or whose ideas we have as adults come to adopt over time. Nothing fixed there! The "objectivity" we seek to live and view the world though is as fluid and changeable as the seasons and so in starting out, let us confess that while objectivity is the goal, we as humans make no claim whatsoever to be "objective" all or even most of the time. That is of course a whole topic unto itself which is beyond what we hope to accomplish in these pages. What we can say is that we will ...do our best...to be objective at all times and identify for the reader, times when we ourselves are aware that we are about to stray off that path. What´s the big deal you may be wondering? The" big deal" is that in these times and even for some time now, at least in some parts of the world and ever-evolving human culture, issues around the production and consumption of meat as it relates to economy, politics, environment(including "Global Warming"), human health, and even morality and religion, have become increasingly and inevitably emotionally charged topics and so we think it appropriate to acknowledge the fact from the beginning here rather than dance around the various related topics on "egg shells" when in fact, our intention is to head on directly into as many angles of all of the above topics in a way that may challenge the belief systems... on both sides... of an increasingly polarized yet wide range of readers and contributors to the various yet always connected debates. We seek to clarify not necessarily "resolve" or arrive at definitive "answers". We also seek to clarify for ourselves as much or more than for others, our own ideas and plans of action as we hope to in some or various ways provide materials here and throughout the site that others may achieve for themselves a better understanding and working knowledge of these issues. To the extent that we and many others are successful in opening and/or maintaining an ongoing dialogue, we believe that we all may become better informed, more effective decision makers and thus better citizens of the global community we share because the decisions we are making are based upon a broad, experiential and fact-based exposure to many diverse viewpoints. As individuals, as workers, parents, students, business people, and ultimately and simply interactive and inter-dependent members overall of the family of Homo Sapiens, our species, we will be better positioned to participate democratically in our own futures, those of our children, their children, and future generations yet to be born. We will be better positioned and more effective as educated, informed, and thinking individuals to participate in our local, national and global communities and governments as well because, like it or not, are all rowing the same proverbial "boat" on this ever shrinking planet. As such, the time and the luxury of putting off or avoiding dealing with the vitally important issues that affect all of us is, we believe, a thing of the past and unless and until greater numbers of us realize and intelligently act upon that reality, we as a species are as at risk for extinction as the ever growing list of other species which should, in and of itself, be an increasingly grim and more than sufficient indication to us all that the time for action is...now. Perspectives Here are two divergent opinions on who is the biggest culprit when it comes to global warming. One is from a recent study published by NASA and the other is from an article we found in TIME Magazine. Compelling views with lots of science quoted. What do you think?
